Revolutional IBT delivers professional Initial Basic Training in Dublin and across Ireland. You'll leave confident, certified, and ready for the road.

What is IBT?

Initial Basic Training (IBT) is a mandatory course required by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) for anyone wishing to ride a motorcycle on Irish roads. Whether you're on a 50cc moped or a full-category A bike, IBT is your first step.

The course is structured into progressive modules, each building on the last — taking you from the basics of bike control right through to riding confidently in real traffic conditions.

Once completed, you'll receive a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion, which is required to progress your learner permit and eventually earn your full motorcycle licence.

Who needs IBT?

  • Anyone holding a motorcycle learner permit for the first time
  • Riders upgrading to a higher category (e.g. A2 to A)
  • Riders whose learner permit has expired and is being renewed
  • Anyone on a Work Permit or moving from an overseas licence
  • Covers all categories — AM, A1, A2 and A

IBT is an RSA statutory requirement under S.I. No. 897 of 2011. You must complete IBT before riding on a public road on a learner permit.

Show Up

You don't need your own motorcycle — we provide training bikes at our Stepaside, Dublin location. You can bring you own full protective gear: helmet, gloves, jacket, trousers, and boots or we can provide them for you. Your driving permit must be valid on the day.

Complete All Required Modules

Philip will take you through each RSA module in sequence — from pre-ride checks through to on-road riding in Dublin traffic. Each module is assessed. Philip's structured, military-honed approach means clear instruction and real progress.

Receive Your IBT Certificate

Once you've successfully completed all required modules, you'll receive your RSA Certificate of Satisfactory Completion. This is recorded on the RSA system and required to progress your licence. You're now legally permitted to ride on Irish roads as a learner.

No — we provide training motorcycles for all IBT categories at our Dublin location. You do not need to own or bring a bike. You will need your own full protective gear: helmet, gloves, jacket, trousers, and boots.

Bring your valid motorcycle learner permit, clothing suitable for Irish weather. IBT runs in most weather conditions.

IBT can be completed over a weekend, typically 8am to 5pm. Philip keeps group sizes small to keep the days as efficient as possible for everyone.

If you don't complete a module satisfactorily, you'll need to rebook that module. Philip's patient, structured approach means most students complete all required modules first time.

No. You only need to complete the modules required for rider's age and the license category the rider is going for.

None at all. IBT is designed for complete beginners. Modules 1 and 2 take place in a controlled, off-road environment before progressing to Dublin public roads.

AM covers mopeds (up to 50cc), A1 covers light motorcycles (up to 125cc, 11kW), A2 covers medium-power bikes (up to 35kW), and Category A is a full licence for any motorcycle. Your learner permit specifies your category — we cover all of them.

No. IBT is training and assessment, not the driving test. Completing IBT allows you to ride on a learner permit. To get a full motorcycle licence you'll still need to pass the RSA motorcycle driving test separately.
